Stupid LAN won't work! (Home network)

I'm trying to network the two PCs in our house with a LAN cable. One is running ME with a PCI LAN card and the other 2000 with onboard LAN. I tried everything it seemed I needed to to get this thing working. I ran ME's home Networking Wizard and after a (lengthy) restart, it seemed ready to go. I didn't really do anything on the 2000 PC as it had a LAN connection already set up - I just installed the LAN drivers. I connected the cable and had a look. NEITHER of them picked it up! >:-( I tried a ping from the 2000 PC and it didn't work, but it did from the Me PC. There's no driver problems but Me's wanting to get stuck in and 2000 is being a spoilt child constantly telling me the cable's unplugged when it definitely isn't! What's going on? (Also, I chose an IP address for the 2000 PC but the ping brings back a completely different one...)

are you useing a cross over cable? (connecting 2 computers together) or a
patch cable (connecting with a hub) look on your cards to see if the
connecting lights are on.....simple stuff first then look for the harder
stuff

It's not a crossover cable, but there's no hub involved... Is this a bad combination
(I can't test lights at the minute because one of the machines has no hard drive...)

Uh, how are the two machines connected exactly?

Greetings --

If you're connecting the two PCs directly together via their NICs,
you absolutely _have_ to use a cross-over cable. This lack is why the
Win2K machine is telling you that it's not connected: it isn't.

Right, I've got a crossover cable. Win2K is liking it and the classic 2-screen icon pops up in the tray and shows the connection speed. Trouble is, neither ping works now. The IP addresses are 192.168.0.1 (for the ME machine) and 192.168.0.2 - they both have the subnet mask (what's that used for anyway?) 255.255.255.0. Why isn't it working?

EDIT: Pings from 2000 --> ME are working. (Stupid ZoneAlarm!) Still not working the other way though.
