Stupid ICS Windows 2000 question

Hi all,

I have a broadband connection and an installed NIC. I have read many
tutorials on how to set up ICS on Windows 2000 Pro. However, one
thing has not been made clear.

Do you check the "Share internet connection" box under the settings of
the "Motorola SurfBoard 4200 USB Cable Modem" or the "Intel(R)
PRO/100B PCI Adapter (TX)"

If it is the former case, I get some weird results. First, I ensure
that the IP address of the Intel card is set to 192.168.0.254. Then I
check the "Share internet connection box" under the settings for the
Cable Modem.

"An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was enabled.
Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. The LAN connection
selected as the private network is either not present, or is
disconnected from the network. Please ensure that the LAN adapter is
connected before enabling ICS"

I searched for htis error on the Internet. Apparently, this error
occurs if another computer on the network has the IP address of
192.168.0.1. I check the IP address of my Intel NIC, and it has
changed to 192.168.0.1 ?!.

The Cable Modem has the following settings:

Obtain IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically
DHCP enabled
Append these DNS suffixes in order:
sa.bigpond.net.au
bigpond.net.au
Register this connection's addresses in DNS
Enable LMHOSTS lookup
Use Netbios setting from the DHCP server

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Cheers

Taras

If you're connecting the modem directly to the PC via USB, then you set ICS
on the NIC. If you are connecting the modem to the NIC, then you need
another NIC.

I don't know Win2k but with WinXP the LAN nic must use fixed address
192.168.0.1 if you want to use ICS.
