Stuff stops working-

This is a little off topic but..stuff that had been working for months,
through Beta 2 and Release candidates and RTM suddenly quit working.

Two days ago I.E. 7 stopped working. When I click the icon, or even double
click the executable, there is a brief flash (sometimes two flashes) as a
window tries to open, but closes within half a second.

At the same time, all data in control panel's "Vista view" disappeared.
When opened, it shows the left pane, with choices "Control Panel Home" and
"Classic View". Classic view is fine. "Home" opens a completely blank
right pane.

Since I prefer Classic, and frequently use firefox, these are not
disastrous, but I sure as heck am wondering what caused it. There are no
indications in the App or System logs to give me a clue.....

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Mike

And-- I forgot. Two things. A.) It's Vista Ultimate. B.) Search has
stopped working as well.

Or rather, Search from the start menu fails to open. Search from the right
click context menu after right clicking a drive icon fails to work as well.
However, it *does* work from the search bar in windows explorer.

WTF? Vista and Office 2007 have been completely updated as of today, so I
don't think an update will cure the problem.

Any ideas?

thanks!

Try running Intenet Explorer with no addons. It may be that a bad IE
extension is killing it.

Press <WINKEY>+<R> to open the run box, then type "iexplore.exe
-extoff" (without the quotes) and press <ENTER> or click OK.

You might also want to scan for malware. --

Thanks, Peter. I have, several times, scanned and turned off add-ons. Same
difference.

I figured out how to make IE open by monitoring it in Process Explorer, then
changing the permissions on the registry keys it seemed to fail at.

So... now it opens......... as a basket case. Completely locked. It will
not go to a web page, merely telling me that www.whatever is currently
unavailable. It will not open Internet Options. And it will not even
close - it has to be killed with task manager. Call me baffled. Of course
the web pages are available. Firefox on the same computer is working fine.
Windows mail is working fine.
So all network connections should be okay.

I have a suspicion it has to do with Search mostly not working, which also
may have to do with registry permissions. But since both IE and Search once
worked, I cannot get a clue to what might have changed those permissions.
Whatever it was, is the culprit.
