Stuff "running in the background".......

J

*John*

I'm still getting used to XP, but so far I really like it. One thing bothers
me though.....I hit a ctl+alt+del to see what was running in the background.
I hit the "Processes" tab and saw that there were 23 processes running! I
remember that when I was running '98 I had like 3 things running if I had no
programs open. I have to imagine that I have a bunch of stuff running that
doesn't need to be there.

1. What needs to be there? (I'm running Norton anti-virus software too).
How do I check to see what this stuff is?

2. How do I shut off what doesn't need to be running?

Thanks in advance,

John

Most of what you see are services in Windows XP. If you wish to cut down on
the number of services running check out

I'd suggest downloading blackviper's services .pdf file since it takes
a fair amount of time to go through his recommendations. It's not
difficult, but he explains one by one why he believes many can be
deactivated.
