Stuck with Windows "Classic" look

After nasty go around with trojan.vundo virus removal and delay in NAV
ability to provide fix (another post altogether), find that after
repair am stuck with Windows Classic look (display properties) and no
options for WinXP appearance settings, etc. No longer have that
option(s).
Any suggestions as to how to restore those options?
