Stuck on Select

Occasionally - while working in an Excel Workbook the
system sticks in the "select an active cell" mode. I can
hit Escape, click mouse buttons or other data entry
methods to no avail. The only way to exit is through the
Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys and shutting down the program...
frustrating if you haven't saved lately!

Can anyone help?

Have you tried hitting F8 - If you see EXT in the statusbar whilst this is happening then you have
likely hit F8 and are in extended mode.

This can also be a stuck key on an old keyboard.

Trying hitting each Shift, Ctrl, Alt and Window key a few times, harder than
usual, but not too hard.
