Stuck in a loop

My brother downloaded an update to his Antivirus program and now every time
he boots the machine it will reboot just as it gets to the desktop.
He has Windows XP Pro.
He cannot access anything because it is constantly restarting over and over.
How can he break this loop and how can we access System Restore from a DOS
Prompt? I am thinking if we can Restore back to before he updated the
Antivirus software it will be running normal again.
I imagine that everything will need to be accomplished through a Dos prompt.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Boot to safe mode(hit continually tab F8 key at boot up until you see the
boot menu, choose safe mode) and do a system restore or uninstall the av
program. I had that happen once years ago and it took a bios update to get
the av program to work. Now-a-days its just easier to use a av program that
works on your machine as there are many out there.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?

When the Windows logo shows pressing the F8 Key will
bring up the menu to start in safe mode (If it is the AV
that is the prob you should be able to get since that
will not be loaded)

Any other ideas anyone??

Thanks!
We booted into Safe Mode and uninstalled the Antivirus update and it is
running fine again.
Appreciate the help!
He is going to change Antivirus programs.
Make it a great day!~

Boot, using the F8 key as BIOS info goes to black to get the menu and
use Safe Mode, which should stop the AV loading.

If you can't even get there, try the
Safe Mode - Command prompt
and give the command
%Systemroot%\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe
to launch System Restore
