Stretched icons in Windows Explorer folder pane

Z

Ziggy

After I installed a bunch of updates to SP1, the icons in the folder pane
have become somewhat enlarged and blurry. The icons in the right pane appear
normal. Any ideas about how to fix this? Thanks.

Hi Ziggy,

See if deleting the IconCache.db file helps. Click Start/Run and type:

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\

Select the file named "IconCache.db" (hidden file) and delete it.

Restart Windows.

If that does not help, post a screenshot.

Hi Ramesh,

I deleted IconCache.db and rebooted, but the problem is still there.
My screenshot is attached. Is there a registry key that controls
the icon size in the folders pane?

Thanks.

Ziggy,

Can't find the screenshot. Yes, there is a registry value that specifies the
size of the small icons in the left pane, but that value is not present in a
new installation of Windows XP.

BTW, can you send me the screenshot via mail? If so, unmunge my email id by
removing the XOX. string from my mail ID.

Ziggy,

One of these suggestions may help:

1. Open Display properties, Themes tab, and then switch to Windows XP Theme
(it might read as Windows XP Theme (modified)

2. Delete the "Shell Small Icon Size" registry value here (if the value
exists):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

3. Try repairing the icons using TweakUI PowerToy for Windows XP.

4. Reinstall the device drivers for your Graphics card.

Sorry about that... the attachment was too big, apparently.
Hopefully this smaller version will make it through.

Ziggy, please note that Ramesh asked you to send the screenshot "via mail,"
not to post it the newsgroup. Although attachments aren't expressly
forbidden here, most of us aren't interested in seeing this, and
particularly for someone with a dial-up connection it can be an imposition.

Too late now, but please note this for the future. Thanks.
