I currently have Streets and Trips 2004 installed on our laptop. I would
like to get a gps receiver USB for this program. Where and what kind do I
need to operate with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2004?

Not a WIndows XP question, and strictly speaking off-topic here, but the
answer is easy: go to Help | Index, enter GPS, then click on "About GPS
Receivers.' There's info on what works with it there.
