Strange Thumbnail Behavior

I want to say out the outset that I have become suspicious of unauthorized pc
entry recently so that I've become acutely aware of things on my computer
that I would classify as strange.

If I click on the My Documents folder and then look at my folder that's
titled FAMILY PICTURES, the folder of FAMILY PICTURES looks as if four small
tif pictures are pasted on it. I, myself, never did that. I want to change
that file folder look to what it looked like originally with a small, blank
file folder thumbnail in its place.

I've right clicked on the FAMILY PICTURES file folder, then clicked
Properties, and then clicked Customize. I'm not sure this is right but I
clicked Restore Default for the Thumbnail view. Nothing Happened. What's
really going on? How can I restore the Thumbnail file folder look that was
originally there-a small empty file folder icon. Has someone been tampering
with the registry? Suggestions would be much appreciated.

I appreciate your trying to help but your suggestion doesn't really address
my problem. Remember, I want to bring up my Family Pictures folder under
Thumbnails. I'm aware that if I click on View>List, I can bring the folder
up showing the original icon under the other kinds of Views. The present
folder look under Thumbnails should NOT exist. I want to return the
look-under Thumbnails-to the original look and I can't do it.

Hello,

From
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1076689235

Ok, i found two articles that seem to attempt handling the above. here they
are,
they might or might not be useful:

[lnk]http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=812003[/lnk]

....and now here's what i did that seems to work:

1. open the folder whose picture you want to change.

2. put all of the image files within that folder into another folder
(sub-categorize
it).

3. now, go back to the original folder and right-click
properties>customize>what
type of folder? select documents. you can leave the box unchecked.

4. select choose picture and select any random picture. hit ok. you
should now
see THAT picture appear on your folder.

5. now to make it appear as your regular icon in thumbnail view go back and
select
restore default. you should now see the picture split into four folder
pictures.
HOWEVER, when you hit OK you will see your folder icon magically appear as
the picture!

You don't want the thumbnail view. Go to View > Icons for the look you
want. I checked; Thumbnail View always gets pictures of first four items in
the folder if items are other than subfolders (e.g. documents,
pictures, etc). While one should be vigilant about unauthorized access, I
doubt this is the case here. Try and let us know.

Look at the properties of the folder and you'll see that you can change
its icon, or change the pictures that are contained in the folder view
as a reminder of its contents. This can only be done if the folder is
in Thumbnail view.
