Strange TCP/IP or Winsock Problem...Help Please!!

Going crazy here trying to figure this one out....

Running Win2k w/SP4... Have been running fine for a long time with
Zonealarm 2.6, decided to upgrade to 6.0???. After seemingly
successful upgrade, Zonealarm reported a system error and would not
start. It recommended to reboot. At reboot I noticed a slow startup,
Zonealarm still did not start with same error. I also noticed in the
event log that truevector service would not start either. Then tried
to search for answers on the web but network was down. Uninstalled
Zonealarm, but network still down. Could ping myself but nothing
outside, not even my local network.

Figured TCP/IP corruption, so I uninstalled tcp/ip then re-installed.
That fixed it, was able to reach out to the network and internet. But
still no firewall. Tried to re-install the older version of
Zonealarm...halfway through installation, the system just black
screened and rebooted. Then tcp/ip was broken
again...uninstall/reinstall to repair worked again.

I then tried to install McAfee firewall. After a seemingly successful
install it refused to start as well and TCP/IP was broken again...could
ping myself but nothing outside. Uninstalled
McAfee...uninstall/reinstall TCP/IP...it worked again.

Tried to repair possible file corruption by reinstalling SP4. After a
successful installation of SP4, TCP/IP was broken again...
uninstall/reinstall worked again.

Thats where I am now. Network functional, but cannot install a firewall
without corruption. Sorry for the long explaination, but wanted to be
clear.

Any ideas??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John,

Your shot in the dark was better that the whole lot of
aimed-on-the-clear-ones that I have tried before! I had posted in this
forum about a problem not getting the IP address from the DHCP on the
router and so far I hadn't been able to solve even with the good help
of the experts in this forum. I downloaded ISPfix and ran it and
voilá, I got internet connection and could switch to a dynamically
assigned IP address. Thanks for your suggestion. I hope it does the
same for Flukedart.

BTW, I suspect that the problem occurred when the adware remover from
ZoneAlarm Security suite removed newnet (as is documented in the readme
of ISPfix).

I'm glad that suggestion helped someone, anyway. It seems my shot in
the dark hit a target that I wasn't aiming at. Oh well, I'll take it.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion, John. I'm glad it helped
Efren, however, my situation remains the same. Lspfix found 0 items to
repair.

Hey- sometimes ya get lucky and actually solve your own problems....

I decided this thing wasn't gonna beat me. I googled around for stuff
like "zonealarm problem" and "zonealarm corrupted system" and found
similar issues. Some guy said just uninstalling zonealarm doesn't
really remove everything. Go delete these registry entries and he
listed them. Then gave a list of all the files zonealarm installs and
to go delete them. While deleting the ones in system32 I found one
undeleteable due to a sharing violation. Meaning, hey, this thing is
loaded up somewhere. Rebooted to safe mode...deleted this
file...rebooted normally...and VIOLA!!! No problem any more!!!

Thnx for tryin, and thnx to the dude that listed all the files!!
