strange square

On some sites, the page will have a large empty rectangle. In the upper
left corner there will be a square. In the square there is a small red
square, a green circle, and a blue triangle. What does this mean? Is there
some plug-in that I am missing or some security setting that I need to
change?

Clear the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and delete
offline content.) It's often recommended that the Temporary Internet Files
(folder) be kept at
40-50 MB. Bigger isn't necessarily better.

Thanks for the answer. I did what you suggested. Then tried again and
still got the strange square. I was trying the Pest Patrol online scan to
see if I liked it. My problem was that I did not wait long enough for the
download to finish and get to the ActiveX permission box. I have dial-up
and sometimes get impatient. When I let the download finish, the strange
square went away and I could run the scan.

David's reply gave me a clue to solving my problem, albeit slightly
different. In my case, I had the Macromedia Flash killer on my
Spywareblaster set to block and disable installation and operation of
Marcomedia Flash player. Once I unchecked the appropriate box to allow
flash play, the 'strange little square' was replace by flash ops playing at
those points on the various websites. Thanks for your help. and thanks for
this newsgroup. Adieu.
