Strange PC Fan Noise

Hi,

Over the last few days my pc has started making strange noises...to
describe it I've have to say it sounds like a heavy breather...as in
every 4 or 5 seconds it wurrs up, and then goes down..it's certainly
not the CD Drive..I've got an Intel P4 2.4mhz processor with a
coolermaster fan..80mm I think, and the fan speed runs at a rock solid
2537rpm, with an average idle temp of 48 degrees...

I also have an ATI 9800xt, but it cant be that, as I can feel the
vibrations thru the case on the cpu side...

Can I simply unscrew the fan off my coolermaster and fit another?
Rather than the remove it and go thru the heat sink paste nightmare?

Cheers

I'd check the fans for dust. A little build up between a fan and heat sink
can make some strange sounds. I think you might also check that cpu temp, I
have four machines running with 2.4 Ghz. processors and non of them run

Sure, you can just take off the fan from the CPU heatsink, but
bear in mind that it might be a poor seal between your CPU and
your heatsink that is causing your fan to rev up (if that is the
problem). If so, there's nothing wrong with the fan and replacing
it won't do a thing.

The CPU fan is probably variable speed -- the more cooling
demands, the faster it turns. That would be my guess as to the
noise. Your case fan will be a constant RPM, even if it is
manually adjustable. So will your power supply fan.

Cheers for the advise.! I've just bought a another Coolermaster case
fan 80mm, (I'm hoping that my heat sink fan is 80mm)...and that it'll
fit.!!

I'll check the machine tonight for dust etc...when I built the machine
I had problems with temp..turned out to be the motherboard...but its
only in the last week or so that it's started wurring up and
down...really annoying..!!

I'll get back to you with results.!!

Cheers
Sam
