Strange "Log Off" and "Shut Down" screen

Hi everyone, I have a weird situation: when I click "Log Off" or "Shut Down"
in the start menu, a dialog window pops up. Usually everything except the
dialog fades into black-and-white, but today I discovered that the screen,
besides fading, did something strange and annoying. You can see it in the
two screenshots:

The same happened to my XP Home Edition couple months ago(another hard
drive) and now it also happens to my XP Pro.

Could anyone tell me what the cause is and how to fix it? I really
appreciate any help. Thank You!

If the problem is persistant, I might suggest looking at
your video card. I had an older video card that sometimes
flickers wierd stuff when starting XP. I bought a newer
video card and the problem stopped. You may want to look
at updating your video card driver as well.

If it were the video card, how come the problem never appeared before, and
once it happened, it stays forever unless I re-install windows. If it's
really the video card, it's gotta be some problems with the driver.

Have you scanned for a virus?

What screen resolution are you running? It could be that
your resolution is set too high for the logon/shutdown
screen windows to show and that is causing the strange
behavior. Try setting the resolution to 1024x768- 85 Hz and
see if that works.

Hey!!! It worked! Yesterday I changed the resolution from 800x600-32bit to
800x600-16bit. Now after I have changed it back to 32bit, everything is
normal. Thanks a lot!
