Strange keyboard layout when joining network...

i have a Sony Viao PCG-8n2m that came with xp installed - when we joined it
to our domain (win2000) the keyboard layout would change with the letters on
the right of the keyboard becoming numbers. i though it was xp that was
causing this problem so formatted it and loaded 2000 then reloaded all the
drivers from the sony website. but the problem is still there.
can you help?

Your NumLock key is on. Check the Vaio manual to find
out what key to press to turn off NumLock.
