Today, an icon briefly appeared in my lower right tray that I had never seen
before. It appeared to be a rotating helix. When I placed the cursor on it,
I got the message (more or less): Checking email configuration settings.
Shortly, thereafter, the icon diappeared from the tray. I have not seen an
icon like this before. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks,

1. Did you get any new software lately? Is it your new e-mail software.
Outlook? Eudora?

2. It is time consuming, but you may want to check what background programs
you have running. There are a few places to look for these. Go to start,
programs, startup folder. Also go to start, run, type msconfig, click ok and
look at the startup tab. If you want to know what these items are, run a
search on the internet with the name of the item to find out what it is.

On my machine that icon appears whenever I access BellSouth's on-line DSL
Help Center. When I shut down the Help Center, the icon eventually goes
away. Given the message you're getting, I suspect that it may be the Help
Center updating stored settings.
