Strange formatting in Vista

I have a form with lots of combo boxes that work as they should do apart
from a rather odd formatting problem.

Having recourse to tab in and out for various purposes like internet
look-ups, other files, etc, I notice that some of the combo boxes have
either changed their background colour or their transparency because the
form colour has replaced the auto/white of their property setting.

Sometimes in fact only the left hand half of these combo boxes is the form
colour which fades into programmed auto/white on the right hand half.

If I go to another record, the problem goes away and the form colour
disappears from the affected combos. If I invoke any internal procedure
normalcy is regained..

It seems obvious then that the problem is caused in some way by the tabbing
action. Immediately upon tabbing in I checked the property settings and they
read as they should - auto/white and normal (not transparent).

Sometimes more or fewer combo boxes are affected by this phenomenon but
there are a favoured few which seem to be invariably affected.

Is my computer haunted?
