Strange Error message with Morrowind

G

Hi.
I have had Morrowind for about a year, and it played fine. After 6 or 7
months, it just stopped working. I removed and reinstalled it. Now, I can
only play for about 2 or 3 minutes before it crashes. When it does, I get a
window with this message: The instruction "0v7c911bf4" referenced memory at
"similar string". The memory could not be "written".
I should note that the first string is always the same, but the second one
changes with each crash.
Anyway, I have been to the game's site and did everything they suggested:
1.Update drivers. Done, I think. It is hard to tell, since I have found 3
different drivers for my video card, all claiming to be the "latest".
2. Play at 640x480. Done, still crashes.
3. Expand virtual memory to 2G. Done, still crashes.
4. Disable write combining. Done, still crashes.
5. Run the Directx checks. Done, everything is fine.
6. Change the Morrowind.ini file. Done, still crashes.
7. Cleaned the video card.
8. Did a memory test on my computer. Everything is fine.

I've done all this, they don't have any other suggestions except to say that
it is the video card. This does not make a lot of sense since the game worked
fine for 6 or 7 months. Why would it stop working?
Anyway, they are convinced that the video card is the problem.
Can anyone PLEASE help me out here? I don't know what to do anymore to fix
this problem.
Other info you should know about my computer:
MSI 865PE Neo 2 Mainboard
P4 2.4 G
512 Corsair RAM
120G Hard Drive
Sapphire 9100 Atlantis Video card
Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum 2 Sound Card
Windows XP Home
I should also note that this only happens with Morrowind. I can play Beyond
Good and Evil and Dungeon Siege and Half Life just Fine.
I'm not sure if this helps, or if I just babbled on too long.
Even if someone can tell me what the message means, I'd be grateful!!!
PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi,

Since they are so certain it's the card, I'm wondering if you
might have a heat problem in the case causing the card to
overheat. Remove the cover for some extra ventilation and
make sure all the fans are clean and functioning properly. :)

Thanks for getting back to me.
For me, the problem is: I don't think my video card is the problem.
Morrowind worked for 6 or 7 months before, and I can play other games fine,
that does not sound like the video card to me!
Anyway, I have checked the fans, they seem ok. The video card did not seem
hot. I opened up the computer for better ventilation, but it still crashed.
My video card passed all Directx tests on 9.0c, so it should be fine.
Also, it's funny how it only crashes with Morrowind. That makes me think it
is more with the game company than my video card. Oh well.....
So, now, any suggestions that may not be linked directly to the video card?

Hi The Endless,

Interesting.. You said that it worked up to 6 or 7 months ago.
Do you remember installing any software or hardware around
that time that might have caused Borrowing to stop working?

Hi. Well, the main thing I can think of is Windows XP Service Pack 2. It
would have been right around that time.
I've tried thinking of other software before, but this one sticks out for me.
Unfortunately, it's kind of hard to say. I abandoned Morrowind for about a
month or two, then came back. That's a big time window.
If that's the case, I wonder what to do? I searched the Service Pack 2
troubleshooting section. The best I could come up with is adding it to the
exceptions list of the firewall. I don't know how this will help, since it
does not access the internet for game play.

Hi Endless,

Sometimes SP2 could cause an issue on specific user accounts.
Uninstall Morrowind, create a new Administrator account and
then install Morrowind again using the new account.

Hi.

Thanks for the advice. I tried it, but it still doesn't work.
The only other major change I can think of is that I switched from the
Microsoft Optical Trackball to a Microsoft Wireless Mouse Explorer 2.0.
Is there some reason this may interfere with the game???

J

Jimmy S.

Hi Endless,

It's possible.. If you haven't done so already, try upgrading the drivers
for that device. If you continue having the problem, try uninstalling the
drivers completely and use a generic mouse with generic drivers.
