Hello All,

Perhaps someone out there has seen this.

I have an Acer laptop that is running XP Pro ( I thought it was home but a
quick look says Professional) Version 2002, Service Pak 3.

Whenever I boot the machine, it goes through the motions of booting up and
ends up at the desktop. It is very sluggish at this point like something is
going on. I don't know what. Then a small message box appears that says,
"Call cancelled due to message filter" or something very close to that. Then
everything is fine. I can't figure out what the filter belongs to. It must
be doing something on booting and this filter has something to do with it.
It drives me crazy. Adds a few minutes to finish and allow me on. Any
thoughts?

Thanks,

Neil

Sounds like you have something trying to dial out, it would be nice to get
the exact wording of the error. however I suggest you get your pc scanned by
reliable malware/virus/hijackware scanner, there are many out there. AVast,
and malwarebytes to name a few.

Figure out what is running at Startup. Skype perhaps or some other VOIP app?

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

This was a good idea. Been a long time since I have looked at msconfig.
However, there is so much in there, very little that I know, that I wouldn't
know where to start.
Any further suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
Neil

Do not run anything provided by "The Real Truth MVP". He is not an MVP,
there is nothing "real" about him, he steals software, and there's more. Do
a Google for PCButts1 if you want to see.

You have to find out what's running. There's no other "magic way". Google for
the names or have a computer tech look at it (not someone from a
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place). Here are some places to start.

Neil, run my diagnostic tool called whatslivern.

Neil - the site he's directing you to is not a Microsoft site, not the
MVP site, it's a hack site with known pirated software and has hosted
filthy pornographic material that he's bragged about creating.
