Storing fp webpages on desktop

I think I have completed my first site but before publishing I came to the
forum to search a few questions ~ just to be sure I have all my t's crossed.

There's one thing I would like to ask. For quick access during
construction, I began my website by saving it in a folder on my desktop. The
folder contains the site and all components I used (and some I thought I
might use), in the web pages. While working on the site, I always accessed
the pages from that folder instead of opening FrontPage each time. I assumed
that so long as I made the site in FrontPage, it wouldn't matter where it was
stored ~ so long as it was on my hard drive, somewhere. I am able to open
the site from the FrontPage program but I have to direct the 'Look in:' to go
to the desktop, then to the folder and, finally to the site's folder (the
folder icon with the little globe pic in the center).

Will this placement cause any problems when I go to publish or should I (or
COULD I), somehow, without screwing anything up ~ move the whole thing into
FrontPage?

I hope one of these days I will know enough about this stuff to be able to
do the 'slap-my-forehead' trick but, right now, I feel like the woman who
really did think the CD drive was a coffee cup holder! Thanks for your help.

Did you initially actually create a website before working on pages?

When you have created a website, you must open front page each time, and
open the web to work on it. (File | Open Site or File | Open Web, depending
on your FP version.

Thanks for your quick response. I started to say, 'Yes, I did create a
website' but now, I wonder if I just created 'pages'. I opened fp2002 and
began with the blank page, adding more as I went along. I went through the
Navigation Folder and have all my pages linked. I am able to link to
everything ~ and every page ~ I made 'linkable', so I figured I did OK. When
I worked on the pages, I began by opening the file from my desktop, and
clicking on a particular page ~ generally the 'index' page. The page would
open in the "Preview" mode and I would chose to 'edit using fp'.

My time to work on the site has been limited and I have so many programs in
my "Start/All Programs" that I wanted to save time by going directly to the
file instead of winding my way through the maze to get to fp everytime I had
a spare minute. My impatience has probably gotten me in trouble, though. If
so, can it be corrected? Thanks.

Does the folder on your desktop, that contains your website have a blue globe on it?

If not, it isn't considered a website folder by FrontPage.
What you need to do if no globe is:
Launch FrontPage
Click File Open Site and browse to the folder.
Right click the folder and select "convert to web"

When FrontPage has converted it, open the site and then click Tools > Recalculate
hyperlinks.

That "should" correct any file path issues for links to images and other pages in the web.
If you don't do the above you will most likely have problems with the site
when it is on the server.


Fwiw, all of my disk based webs are kept on a root drive, such as E:\ website

true indication of how the site will operate once published then I think it

Ah but, and it's a big but.....
It's very possible because of how you have edited your web, that your web contains "absolute" file based links
which are based on hard drive file locations, and not relative links which are based on the root folder for
your web.

A quick way to find out is to do a global search for: file:///
and have FP search the html code.
If you get any hits, you need to correct the links.

You can also Preview in browser and right click the images and select Properties.
If the path starts with file:/// you have problems.

OK, I checked the images by clicking Properties and I guess I'm in trouble
because they do have the file:/// in their paths. Am I right in assuming the
links at the bottom of your post are my fix (or fixes)? If so, am I to
choose one or should I do them both and are they pretty well self-explanatory
as I'm feeling pretty dim-witted, right now?

I'm not against just moving the file into FrontPage and doing whatever I
have to do to correct the links, if that is an option, too. Thanks.

Ok.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner ( with Expression Web Designer and
SharePoint Designer support )
Download links are at the bottom of the page.
Run the functions that clear:
The Hidden Temporary files.
The Hidden Cache (*.web) files.

Then: Open FrontPage, then click File > Open site and browse to your web folder and open it.
Once the web is opened click Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks.
Then preview some pages in your browser and check the properties of the images.

If the path still points to file:/// you will need to remove the images, save the page
and then reinsert the images and save the page.

When reinserting the images "Do Not" browse outside of the root folder for your web.

In code view the path to images should look like <img src="imagename.jpg">
If the page is in the same folder as the image.

Or if you use an images folder it will look like
<img src="images/imagename.jpg">

OK, I have downloaded the fix and run both functions. Now, when I open FP,
click on File and Open, it brings up the "Open File" window with my web
folder (the folder icon with the blue globe on it), in the "Look in:", giving
me a choice of which PAGE of the site (or internal folder ie: _private;
images; etc.) I want to open, instead of opening the site as a whole. Is
this what I should be seeing and if so, do I open each page and Recalculate
Hyperlinks? This inability to open the site as a whole is what lead me to
mention in an earlier post that I wondered if I had actually created a
website or just made pages that I somehow managed to link together.

I bet you are just baffled by my brilliance! But, be gentle, I'm old.
Today, at 6:28am, my first great-grandchild was born.

Hi Kathleen ~ Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't work for me. When I
Click on File | Open Web, it brings up "My Web Folder", (this is what I
actually named the folder), in the "Look in:"

This is my working folder. Inside is all the stuff that I used (or thought
I might use) in building my site, and the folder with the blue globe, ie: "MY
WEB".

I understand that if all were working as it should, I could click on that
"MY WEB" folder and my whole website would open up in FrontPage. Instead,
when I click on it, it just transfers that folder name, ie: "MY WEB", to the
"Look in:", and displays all the pages I made, in the resulting window. But,
at this point, it still hasn't opened anything in the FP screen. It's still
wanting me to choose which PAGE I want to open in FP. The only way I can
open my whole website in FP is to do it page by page.

I'm sure this isn't the way it is supposed to work but I have no idea how to
change it. That's where I need help. Thanks.

Ok,
After you lick File > Open Web and it brings up "My Web Folder,"
click once on My Web Folder to select it and then click Open.

FP will then display a list of all of the files and folders in your web.

Your web is now open in FP.
You do not have to open a page in the editor, but simply click Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks.
