stopping ZIP folders from appearing

Vic

In EXPLORER I've figured out how to stop sub-directories from opening when a directory is highlighted but for the life of me cannot
figure out how to stop ZIP files from showing as sub-folders.

Would someone please enlighten me? I prefer to not see zip files as sub-folders.

Thanks
Vic

For some reason this site will NOT let me start a new thread. PLEASE HELP ME
IF YOU CAN.
I just found Zip Files All Over my hard drive and I do not have a clue as to
where they came from or how to get rid of them. Some are associated with
Windows and some with other programs. The question is can I just delete
them???? Thank you so much for ANY and ALL help you can give me.

The reason you're having such problems is that you are using the web
interface to read this newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader,
such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See

Neither I nor anybody else can advise you as to whether they should be
deleted without knowing what they are. Provide their names and locations for
more help.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I BELIEVE you mean that when
you open a folder containing one or more zipped archives,
they appear as folders with a zipper on them rather than the
clamped ??? in yellow.

If that is what you are talking about, it is likely that you
simply have not installed what that file considers a
compatible version of Zip yet.

Go to www.download.com and look for the most recent copy of
Zip or Unzip you can find. I just downloaded Zip 8.

Install Zip 8 / 7 which will be out of your way until you
need it, and those zipped archives will then appear as
archives. (the clamps)

When I'm doing a new install (like I do on my system fairly
frequently), when I'm downloading and installing software
off my backup hard drive, if I open a folder to install a
program and I see a folder with a zipper on it, that tells
me I forgot to install my Zip utility.

I stop, I install Zip 8, and when I go back to that folder,
the folder with the zipper on it has become the proper icon,
meaning I now have compatible software for that archive.

Typically, the design and color of the icon will tell you
what software it goes with.

If the icon looks "weird" (I'm not a tekkie), then likely
you haven't yet installed its related software.

Many files will appear as "ghosts" (fuzzy, vague outlines)
until you install their related software.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Windows XP has a native way of dealing with zip files called zip folders. Using the
native Windows XP zip folders, the zip files appear as folders. Personally I find that
annoying. So, I uninstall that capability immediately, and install a third party
zip/unzip utility which allows the zip files to show as files, NOT FOLDERS. There are
many free zip/unzip utilities, but I prefer WinZip, which has a slight charge, unlimited
updating to future versions, and MANY context menu command which I actually use such as
right clicking a selected file or files then left clicking WinZip/Zip and email on the
context menu. That opens a compose window of the default email program with the zip file
already attached to it. Anyway, whatever zip/unzip program you use, get rid of the native
Windows XP zipfolders. Unfortunately this Windows XP component cannot be removed by using
Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/Add Remove Windows Components button. It has to be
done this way:

To disable ZIP files being shown as folders:

Click Start/Run, type this string:

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Click the OK button

You should receive a dialog that says "DllUnregisterServer in zipfldr.dll succeeded."

Then reboot your system and install whatever third party zip software you want to use.

To restore the native Windows XP zipfolder behavior, uninstall whatever third party zip
software you have installed (if any), reboot your system, and simply do the same as above,
typing this string:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Again, you should receive an appropriate dialog.

Those are associated with Zone Alarm. Ask their tech support.
