Stopping automatically 'restored' desktop items?

Howdy, all

New install of WinXP/Pro. Spent the day installing programs and drivers, and
pretty much everything seems to be working okay. HOWEVER: every time I start
the PC, one particular folder (created during one of the ATI driver installs)
automatically opens on my desktop. Granted, it's just a single click to kill
it, but I'm having to do this every time.

I've looked in Startup and in both Local_Machine and Current_User RUN
sections of the Registry, and there's no entry for this folder. I did a
registry search and can't find it listed anywhere, and if it's a service it's
a well-hidden one.

So: how can I stop XP from automatically restoring this folder (or any
folder; I prefer to start with a clean screen each time) each and every
startup.

The folder's not driving me crazy, but no knowing how to turn it off is. :)

Thanks!

I understand that you have looked in Startup and the Run sections of the
registry, but something is starting that is causing that folder to
appear. You just haven't found it. Since you didn't mention what the
folder is, I can't be more specific or help you with what you see. The
problem can be caused by either a blank entry in either the Current
User/Run or the Local Machine/Run keys or a startup item that isn't
formatted properly.

If the folder is My Documents, see line 255 on the right here:

Or look at what MVP Ramesh has written here:

You may not have a Dell, but the concept will be the same.

*bwah*hah*hah*

Or, to quote Bob (then soon to become GlitchBob): "I feel so BASIC!"

It was the quotes thing. The LocalMachine Run section had an entry for the
ATI desktop utility with a long-filename folder name (spaces in it), which
was equating to auto-opening that folder (it hadn't been loading the desktop
utility either, but I didn't notice any degradation of quality. Go figure). I
straightened that one and another one in the same state out, and the problem,
she is fixed.

Thanks very much!

You're very welcome. I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the
time to let me know.
