Stop Win Messenger loading

Is it possible to stop Win Messenger from loading
at Startup?
In the righthand tray the icon appears as "not signed in",
but if it were inactive then it should at least be hidden,
as I have opted for inactive icons to be hidden.

I have "disabled" something called Messenger in "Services"
but this seems to be different. In fact the data along with it
explicitly reminds me that Messenger is NOT Win Messenger.

Apart from being annoying, I worry about security associated
with it.

HijackThis allows me to remove a line from the Registry which
seems to load it but it is still there after reboot.

p.s.
The OS has recently been reloaded completely along with SP2.
I have WinXP Home.

To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from its Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.

I believe this is what you want. If you are using OE 6, go to Tools >
Windows messenger > Options > Preferences and in the general area UNcheck
"run this program when windows starts" and "allow this program to run in the
background." After doing this IM does not load on startup and OE loads as
usual.

Open windows messenger. Tools, options, preferences tab, uncheck: run
windows messenger when windows starts and allow messenger to run in the
background.

That is unrelated (but is a target of attack, and if you are not on a
LAN is best off).

In Messenger's own Tools - Options, uncheck the 'Run when Windows
starts'

In Outlook Express, Tools - Options uncheck 'Automatically logon to
Messenger' and in its View - Layout uncheck 'Contacts' (which it invokes
Messenger to manage)
