How do I stop search companion from opening when I double
click on the E, A or C drive? If I right click on the
drive then click open it works.

There is a solution to this issue
on www.dougknox.com , click on windows xp fixes->Search/Command Prompt Opens
When Double Clicking a Folder

Run this vbs file and it should fix it.

I would like to know this as well.

But I did come up with a band-aid for it. I like to use
Explorer windows (don't know if it would be the same for
normal windows). From Explorer, go to TOOLS, FOLDER
OPTIONS, click the FILE TYPE tab, then look for FOLDER
and FILE FOLDER. One at a time, select it then click the
ADVANCE button below. If what you want it to do by
default (when dbl-clicked) is listed, select this option
and click the DEFAULT button. (if there is already a
default operation, it will be the one in the list that is
bold). If the operation you want by default is not
listed, you can create a new operation by using the
buttons on the side (you will need to name it and then a
program to open it with). After you create it you will
then need to set it to default using instructions listed
above.

I hope this helps,

Anando gave me this instant fix for the same problem I had ...cleared the
bug right up ...
Start | Run | type : REGSVR32/i SHELL32.DLL

OOPS! there's a space before the switch ...see below
Start | Run | type : REGSVR32 /i SHELL32.DLL

Editing the "File Folders" in the Folder Options is the cause for the problem. It sets "Search" [find] as the default verb when you right-click a folder or a drive. Don't use the UI.
