John

I just installed XP and most every time that I boot up I
get a blue screen with a message that is of little help
to me. I have tried to write it down several times and
over the many attemps have i think got the message. It is
as follows: An attempt was made to write to read-only
memory. If this is the first time restart, If this screen
appears again, follow these steps.

Make sure any hardware or software is properly installed
If new installation contact software manufacture for any
windows updates needed.
If problem continues remove software or hardware. Disable
Bios memory options such as caching or shadowing.

I have only two other programs on my computer, Acrobat
Reader and a McAfee Antivirus. How do I know if they are
properly installed. Should I just uninstall them one at a
time to see if that makes a differenc. Thanks

Hello, see this page for more info.

STOP messages are recorded in the eventlog.
Type eventvwr.msc from the RUN box and click on
'system' . The events are in the right hand pane, newest
at the top. Click on the events for more info.
