STOP error code 0x23 (BSoD)

winxp/sp2
2 internal HDDs, 1 external HDD with it's own power supply.


I keep getting stop error 0x23 when I delete a file from the external
USB/Firewire
drive.
CHKDSK /r/f shows no errors
MEMTEST86 shows no errors
Seagate diag tools shows no disk errors
Disabled start-up items in MSCONFIG and still get BSoD,
Safe mode seems to work correctly - 'seems' because it is an intermittant
problem

Prior to this, the partitions on the external were referenced as
mounted drives iinstead of my drive leetters and I remoeved the mounted
drive assignments and assigned drive letters to each partition on the ext
HDD. <Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it was the last
thing taht I did.>

Any idea why i get the stop code?
