If you don't have a Windows 2000 install CD-Rom you won't be able to start
the process of recovery.

| Same thing just happened to my laptop today. This is all way over my
| head, but I'm trying to understand it. Any advice would be
| appreciated. THis is what I tried so far:
| 1. I f8'd and tried to boot in safe mode. Nope. 2. I made an ERD off
| of my other PC running the same OS. No Help. Then I added the NTDTLR
| and NTDETECT files to the same disk and tried to boot with that from
| the FDD. No help. 3. Then I added the SOFTWARE.SAV file as well and
| that didn't work because I think it went back to booting from the Hard
| disk because of an "invalid BOOT.INI file" message, so I don't think it
| ever saw the SOFTWARD.SAV file on the floppy, (whatever that is). 4. I
| checked to see if I had a Recovery Console installed and I do not. And
| I don't have the MS2000 install disks or CD to do a new install. But
| even if I did, cannot afford a wipe of my HDD right now! I'll loose
| months of work that I simply can't ever recover). (Yes, I'm guilty of
| the cardinal sin).
|
| I saw the info on renaming the SOFTWARE file to SOFTWARE.OLD, etc. The
| problem is, I cannot even get the thing to boot at all as described
| above to make any such attempts. Can you please advise?
