Stop Automatic Email Opening

After using Office 2003, returned to 2000. No problems except one. I cannot
seem to find where to configure so that upon deleting an email from within
the open email, the next email opens. I really don't want this feature.

Where do I find where to stop this automatic opening of an email upon
deletion of an open email? Thanks for help.

You mean controlling when items are being marked as read?
Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button Reading Pane
