STOP 0xc000021a if using PQBoot to start an alternative OS

Hello,

I think this error should be documented in the knowledge base of microsoft.
It seems a lot of people actually encounter this problem, and just reformat
instead of undoing some modifications made by PQBoot.

When you use PQBoot to start for example Linux from another partition, it
will hide your Windows NTFS partition. The thing is, you don't have PQBoot on
Linux. So you can't unhide it through Linux. The only way out of this is to
use the Partitionmagic CD, which is bootable, to unhide the partition. This
way, the STOP message will not show, and XP will boot happily.

Symptoms:

Can't boot XP (in every mode possible)
You can see "autochk not found..." message in a XP stylized DOS "shell" (I
don't really know how to explain it, you know, the blue thing that opens when
a software has to change something before booting windows)
then you'll receive a BSOD like this:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly
with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Cure:

Start the Partitionmagic CD, select your NTFS partition, and search in the
menus for "Unhide partition". Apply, reboot, you're done.

I saw a few people with this problem who couldn't figure it out, and it just
happened to me.

Cheers!

Hi,

If it's correct, and I have no means to verify your assessment as I do not
use Partition Magic or PQ Boot, the correct place for an article is in
Symantec's knowledge base, not Microsoft's.
