STOP 0x0000008E (0xC0000003)

I replaced a faulty 80gb hard drive in my pc recently. Keep in mind that this
is the ONLY change to the system I've made since it was working normally. I
changed the hard drive because shortly after initialising the new drive, the
pc couldn't boot from the 80gb drive (mysteriously. I think this drive is in
need of retirement and will fail soon - can anyone please verify?).

Because I couldn't boot from the 80gb drive, I decided to install XP Pro on
the new drive. After working around another mysterious problem (STOP 0xA5
(0x11) error - this confused me because I've installed XP Pro on this system
many times over the years without incident), The pc rebooted and loaded the
installation proper (the screen shortly before you set regional settings and
such). This screen displayed for around half a minute, and then the Stop
Error in the subject (0x0000008E (0xC0000003) appeared.

I haven't been able to find out what this ones means. Can anyone help me
with this? Forums online suggest that it could be an issue with components
overheating (which could be accurate as there was a screw in the fan on my
graphics card that was stopping it from spinning and the card was overheating
which is when the problems all started).

Thanks in advance for any help.

A search of the windows Knowledge Base produced this result:

Sounds like a hardware failure when Windows won't clean install. Third
article down suggests a stop during install may be due to bad RAM. Test you
RAM with memtest86+ Test one module at a time to identify which module is bad.

OK, I haven't fixed the problem, but I worked aroung it by removing all the
memory and then inserting as little as possible to install XP. The install
proceeded cleanly and I've been using the computer fine ever since.

To compound my confusion, the pc now runs fine with all the memory back in.
I suspect I may have mixed up the order in which it was installed (the DIMM
that was installed in slot 0 is now in another slot)

I'm upgrading my system, so I'll be replacing almost all the hardware in my
box (even replacing the box), so faulty memory shouldn't be an issue for very
long.
