Stop 0x0000007b Inaccessible Botto Device Error

Thomas Revoy

I just upgraded my P2/333 machine at home running Window
2000 SP4 to a P4 2.4Ghz (both intel cpu and motherboard)
I now get the Inaccessible Boot device when w2k goes to
boot. I get the error meesage right after the black and
white text screen saying loading windows with the status
bar at the bottem of the screen. But when I swap in a
spare hard drive I have with Win98se on it, that drives
boots no problem. I figure is may have to do with the
new HD controller. I have tried to boot from a set of w2k
boot diskes created from my w2k cd, and I get the
following error "\ntkrnlmp.exe did not load this is error
is code 7" hit any key to exit, and then the machine
resets.

Any help would be of great help.

TIA.

You're right on-track.
Windows 9x will re-PlugNPlay this stuff, but Win2K won't.
You have to force it.
The best way is to use sysprep to strip the hard drive
ENUM, controller, motherboard BEFORE you change
motherboards. Then it will PNP with the new one just fine.
Try booting to the CD and do a repair install. I doubt it
will fix you, but it's something to try at this point.

So the best thing is to reinstall in the old
motherboard. Then run "sysprep -pnp" from the command
line. Shut the system down, change back over to the new
motherboard, and with like I should be able to have the
option to install the drivers for the new motherboard
from Intel's install CD.

Download Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q271965, and
follow the directions. Unfortunately, you'll have to put
your W2K harddrive back on your P2/333 motherboard in
order to run the "mergeide.reg" file and copy the "sys"
drivers. When that's done, put the hard drive on the P4
motherboard, and it will appear to start normally.
However, you'll have to wait a few minutes while
it "rediscovers" all the "new" hardware. Your only "clue"
that you haven't "locked up" your new computer is that the
mouse pointer changes to the "hourglass." This has worked
at least six times on different machines for me. I
haven't figured out why Microsoft just doesn't add all
this to the default W2K files!
