Stolen software question

Hi ... I had a big back to school bash on the weekend and
someone stole my windows xp pro retail software disk but
i didn't have the keys with it , i put my license sticker
somewhere else , any ways my question is my friend has
the same version of windows that i do and he mention to
me if he burn a copy of his xp pro disk and gives me the
copy that it will work with my keys , is this true ???
Also can i get a new disk from microsoft ??? Thanks

Your friend is correct. The CD itself is only a cheap piece of
plastic. The Product Key is your license and that's what you really
paid for. If he makes you a copy, make sure it's the same type of CD
that you had. In other words: MS Retail Full install, MS Retail
Upgrade install, OEM.

Since you have your Product Key, you can also call MS customer service
and order just the media from them at a small cost plus shipping.

If your friend has the exact same retail version, then yes that will work.

The setup on the CD will check the Key offered as being appropriate
for its own series. So if his is also retail, and is Full or Upgrade to
match your one, it will work with your key
