"Sticky" Mouse

I've finished rebuilding my system without any problems (XP-2, 2gig
memory), except for the mouse. It is 'sticky', in that many times
when I go to move it, it momentarily sticks before moving and
occasionally will not move at all for about 30 seconds, especially
when a program is opening. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse
twice, but still have the problem. It's a Microsoft USB wheel mouse
and is showing in Device manager twice, once in the 'Human Interface
Devices" & in 'Mice & other pointing devices'. I also have 'Mouse
Pointers' installed from the 'Accessaries' option. Also, in the
'Human Interface Device' listing, it is shown as a '3 button mouse'.
I'd appreciate any help with this aggravating problem.

Is your mouse wireless? Optical? I have a wireless optical mouse and if the
USB sender is to close to the pc it interferes with the way the mouse arrow
moves. Try deleting all references to your mouse from device manager and
reboot and see if windows sorts the problem.

And relocate the sender/receiver that plugs into the USB.

Very important to know type of mouse. If ball type, remove ball and clean
the shafts that are rotated by the ball. If wireless,
perhaps battery or location of antenna (part that plugs into USB port).
Mouse pad? Wired mouse---defective cable?

Wired or wireless?

Optical or ball?

If it's a ball mouse, in my experience these get more and more gummed
up as time goes on, and that can result in problems like those you
describe. Cleaning the ball usually helps, but I've never been able to
do a good enough job of cleaning to make it anything like new again.

If it's a ball mouse, my advice is to throw it out and replace it with
an optical one. They can be bought for under $10 US.
