Stick with XP?

What makes you stick with Windows XP as of now? Do you plan upgrading to
Vista or will skip it? I will skip it. For me being always up-to-date is not
an issue. (I was using Winows 98 from 1998 to 2004, when I skipped to XP
that came with a then new computer). My experience with XP is since 2004, so
I'm not that fed up with it. ;) So, are you planning an upgrade any time
soon?

Installing Vista is not an upgrade but a downgrade from XP. Vista is MS
just making money with crap like they did with Windows Me. Check out
Ubuntu at www.ubuntu.com if you want the operating system for the 21st
century.

If you want to get a load of opinions regarding Windows Vista, go do
your own Googling.

Well, I skipped XP, until 15 April.
Happily used Win 2000 for 8 years.
Ditche win 98 in Oct 2003, as I recall.
On 15 Apr, I ordered XP PRO SP2, due to arrive on the 'morrow.

I plan on building a PC using Ubumtu Live CD.
Then install XP.
I'll likely install Vista Ultimate at some point to create a multiboot
system.

I am currently planning on sticking with XP for the next while.

The reason is simple - Vista Ultimate (which I have sitting on the
table beside my computer) refuses to install as an upgrade over my
Windows XP and I do not want to go through all the horse shit and
hassle of reinstalling two hundred plus application programs on a
Vista clean install.

Giggle.

Ubuntu is a knock-off of an operating system developed in the middle of the
20th century.

They tried putting lipstick on the pig, but, well ...

For me:
Neither of my machines can run Vista Premium unless I spend lots of money.
It seems too much like hard work to go to Vista Basic.
In fact, I might just wait until I replace them. I might even wait for the
next version and save even
more money.

I agree with you. Vista is not only more demanding of hardware, it is more
demanding that all of the hardware be tuned together to run it. Changing a
video card and adding memory usually does not address the need to have
same-generation hardware that works well together. It makes more sense to
buy a system with Vista preinstalled because then you are getting a system
designed and tuned for Vista, with all the correct drivers, and warranteed
to work with Vista.

I'm waiting on the survey on how Vista SP1 performs.
However it does seem to be a lot of expense or work to replace XP when
it works. I have an old 2.8 mhz MB that uses old memory & intel P4
chip. I can't upgrade it further but for the life of me I can't come up
with what I need it to do. It runs, XP runs, it does my work, etc etc.
So unless I see Vista for less than 50$ I'm not going very far.

Yep, it's so good, it's lasted that long and getting better and better.
Rock 'n' Roll started back then too and, last I checked, it's still only
rock 'n' roll but we like it, to quote a phrase.
They tried putting lipstick on the pig, but, well ...

Erm, that would be Vista.

I'll stick with XP because it works. It's rock-solid reliable and
does everything I want an OS to do. I've never used Vista, so I'm not
about to bash it, but for me, there's just no reason to gamble on it.

I know 3 people who use, or have used, Vista. All of them have the
same opinion, which is along the lines of "I hated it at first, but
after a while I got used to it and it's okay."

"It's okay" seems to be about the best opinion that anybody has of
Vista. I've never seen or heard anybody, either in person or in
print, say "It's great! You have to get it!" Only that "It's okay."

Just my $.02.

I shall certainly upgrade when I find a pirated copy from somewhere!! Perhaps
one of my clients will buy a new system on which VISTA is pre installed which
they have no need of. I shall grab that copy and work with it to give you my
opinion!

I think it's less than great, but much better than OK. I like it and
prefer it to XP.

Sounds the same as many testimonials after XP was released.

Perhaps so, but I don't think anybody ever described Win95/98 as
rock-solid reliable and doing everything they ever wanted an OS to do.
XP is the first Winows that I've ever been able to say that about and
that, I think, is a key difference.

Unlike 95/98, XP ain't broke, so I'm not in any rush to fix it.

Excellent point. Although I'm not so sure I'd go as far as to say that
98SE was "broke". per se. (But I will have to concede the point that XP
seems much less prone to blue screens).
