Status Bar Doesn't Work

Status bar doesn't show file size when no file is selected why?
I can highlight a file and it shows size. In all previous Windows
versions this worked fine. This has to be a programming mistake. Will
it be fixed in a service pack or something?
How can I see how much is in my trash bin?
Also, not sure what I did but now the "Favorite Links" in explorer
windows just has a link that says "(Empty)". I can right click and
select "Restore Defaults Links", but it doesn't work. When I select
"Open Favorite Links Folder" the links are still there. Any way to
fix? I tried system restore and that didn't work.

I think this has been discussed many times.. and believe it or not this is
|by design| now what kind of idiot thought that this was smart I dont
know...

You can take a look at an alternative file manager that is shareware
that does lots and lots of nice tricks

http://www.xyplorer.com/

there are free ones too if you go to snapfiles.com and do a search for file
managment and
select view only freeware you will see some there

Vista totally destroyed windows explorer.. its such a shame.. they added
some nice things
but they made it horribly unusable with other stupid changes
