Static IP not resolving DNS

**** Please Read Entirely *******

We have XP Pro machines that all use the same DNS, the
units with Static address will not resolve the aliased
name from the DNS. The units with DHCP assigned addresses
all accept the alias. WHY????

The printout of the IPCONFIG /ALL yeilds no differance
between the machines except for the IP Address assigned.

The DNS is working properly, supporting a 5,000 node
network. The DHCP is also working properly, supporting the
same.

Static & DHCP W2K machines are not affected.
Static & DHCP Win98 machines are not affected.

We have and are working around this "issue" but want to
understand why it's happening.

What is this alias for? Is it for a machine that has a
static address?

If you use "nslookup" from a command prompt to attempt to
resolve a name, does it work? Compare the results of
that to a machine that does resolve the alias, doing the
same nslookup command.

Any differences? If so, what are they?
Can you confirm that the DNS server has a record for
whatever it is you're looking up?

Another thing to check: What are the "DNS suffix for
this connection" and the various settings in TCP/IP
Advanced settings for the connection on both a working
machine and a non-working machine? Are they identical?

Also are you doing similar requests for resources from both a static
configured machine and a DHCP configured machine ?
