Static for audio on Hauppage PVR-250 (Roslyn)

I've got a Hauppauge PVR-250 installed into a Windows XP MCE 2004 computer.
I'm using the SVideo and stereo auto inputs on this card to connect to my
cable TV box.

The video looks good. For audio, all I get is static. Same with the FM
tuner.

I've tried uninstalling and running Hauppauges HWCLEAR app to completely
remove any settings/software. After a reinstall, I have the same issue.

Any suggestions as to how to correct this?

AFAIK, the PVR250 has audio in, but no audio out cabling.
It encodes received info in MPEG-2 format, and later
that format is decoded to get back the audio and video.
The audio samples from the decoding process are sent to
whatever you are using for a sound device.

Some AC'97 sound chips and their drivers, seem to restrict
what is sent to the SPDIF connector. Perhaps this is a
feeble attempt to prevent bit-perfect copying of audio, I
don't really know. In any case, I would start by using
amplified speakers tied to Lineout on the back of the
computer, and see if the sound is OK on there.
