I'm running XP Pro with AVG8.0 in the am and Windows Defender in the pm.
Also ran MBAM malware for popups and it removed 69 infections. The main
problem I'm having lately is the puter does not start up and run the first
time. It is set on automatic restart and sometimes takes 3 restarts before it
loads up. Any ideas?

I assume that when you say it doesn't start, you don't mean the computer
itself doesn't start but that Windows boots and immediately restarts. If
you *do* mean that you push the power on button on your computer and
nothing happens, then that is a classic symptom of power supply failure.
Usually simply replacing the faulty power supply with a new one works. Of
course, if you have a laptop you can't do this yourself.

If you mean that Windows restarts you can set it to not automatically
restart so you can get the Stop Error (blue screen) and research it:

System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings and under System Failure
uncheck "Automatically Restart".

However, if this isn't a hardware issue there is a strong possibility that
the infections damaged the operating system too badly. In that case, I
would back up your data using a rescue system such as a Bart's PE or
Knoppix Linux live CD and do a clean install of Windows.

Thanks for the reply. You assumed correctly. The puter starts but it does 3
restarts before it loads up. Once it loads it's fine. I will look at your
suggestions and try to solve the problem. Is it possible that I have an
adware corrupted file in the startup registery? I hope I do not have
reinstall xp. It was installed when I had to do an upgrade. He did it under
his licesnse and I do not have a disk. And I recently found out he had moved
to North Carolina.

You should always have installation media for whatever operating system
you're running. There is a good possibility that you will need to do a
clean install, but there's no way of me knowing for sure. Again, you left
out information such as whether this is a desktop or a laptop, whether it
is a branded OEM machine (HP, Dell, etc.) or a generic home-built. If it is
a branded machine, you can usually get restore disks from the OEM. If it is
a generic-built, there should be a Certificate of Authority sticker on the
case with the Product Key. The Key is your license to run Windows, not the
CD. I have no idea who "he" is who did an "upgrade under his license" but
it sounds very much like you may have a pirated version of Windows. Again,
I can't tell from what you've written. If you can get into Windows and this
isn't an OEM machine, you can get the Product Key with the Magical
Jellybean key finder program (free). If it is a legitimate key, then any XP
install CD that matches the version installed will do (XP Home, Pro, Media
Center).
