Does anyone know how I can keep aim6 from starting up and slowing things down
when I start up my computer (windows xp)? I only want to use it when I
choose but it takes over whenever I start up.

Look through the programs options, there should be a setting for it starting
up at startup.

If there is no such option, Click Start then click Run.
Then type (without quotation marks) "msconfig"
Click the 'Startup' tab and uncheck the AIM entry.
Click OK then you will have to restart your PC.

Thank you--that was a terrific help--made my startup a lot quicker. I
noticed a lot of stuff is starting up automatically that I may or may not
want--I could identify some of it but how do I find out what is starting up
and running. I have a feeling that a lot of things I never use are starting
up automatically and are slowing down my computer both in startup and shutdown

Manage your Startup matrix:

It is always better to stop programs from starting with Windows from within
the programs themselves, so look in their Options before changing anything
with msconfig - you're just examining things at this stage. If a program
doesn't offer any way to control startup from its Preferences, then use
msconfig to uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.
