startup / system recovery problems

I recently uninstalled a virus scanner form my PC (System Suite 5 by VCOM).
Afterward on attempting to restart windows XP Professional, I got an error
message stating that the file "C:\windows\system32\config\system" (notice
that this file has no extension) is missing or corrupt.
Therefore windows will not boot. I attempted to fix the problem by running
System Restore in Safe Mode. That didn't work... I got the same error
message about the missing or corrupt file. Then I tried using the recovery
console to run System Restore from a command prompt... that failed because
windows attempts to start... and still can't start.
I need to know if there is another way to run System Restore (without
Windows having to start) and restore Windows to an earlier state.
