startup stalls

after starting up xp my computer stalls when it gets to
the welcome screen. The screen remains all blue instead
of proceeding to my desktop screen. the only way I can
get past it is to revert my hard drive on startup or
completely unpower the computer, reconnect then
startup.What's wrong? any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a disk corruption issue. (Crosslinked files, bad
entries, etc). Boot to Safe mode (F8). Once running, Click
Start, Run (Type) Chkdsk C: \R. You will be notified that
Windows cannot lock the drive and would you like to do the
disk check on the next reboot - Answer Yes and then Reboot.
