I've been having a strange problem with both shutting
down and starting up Windows. They seem to go hand in
hand as the startup problem doesn't tend to happen as
often if Windows shuts down properly.
Here's what happens. On shutting down Windows XP Pro
everything seems to go as planned. It doesn't take any
longer than it should or anything like that, but when it
is ready to power off it doesn't, it powers down. The
monitor stays on with the shutdown screen up while the
computer itself makes a distinctive power down noise.
It's as if it's off, but it's not, if that makes any
sense. Anyway, I resolve this by holding down the power
button for 5 seconds and then it shuts down completely.
After which, when I start up, usually results in
the "your computer has not shut down properly, which mode
to you want to start in" safe mode, normal etc. screen.
The next problem is on start up. This seems to happen at
any given time, but more often after the power down
issue. I will start my computer and when it gets to the
black Windows XP loading screen with the loading bar
Windows simply won't load. It just sits on that screen
for hours if I leave it running. I literally have to get
lucky and eventually it will finally make it past that
screen and start up. Here's the catcher. When I
originally turn the power on everything on the computer
starts up, my USB hub and external Zip drive kick on and
things are loading. But when it gets to the black
Windows screen I mentioned the USB hub and external Zip
(both connected to the motherboards USB ports) power
down. I know this because the lights on the hub go out
and the Zip makes a noise. I also know if I'm going to
make it past this point because they will power back up
and then Windows will finally start loading.
Thanks so much for any help. This problem has been
making me crazy!
