My computer is extremely slow in starting up and I am told that I may be having too many programs running in the background. When I go to mscongig and then look at stsrtup list, which programs are must and should keep on the list?

You don't have to have any programs running at boot, for XP to function. On
a clean install, there are no programs in the list. You should run your AV
program and firewall on boot. Everything else is a matter of whatever you
want.
