Startup programs will not run

When I turned on my computer today, I noticed that not all of the usual
startup apps/processes ran. When I tried to click on some of them manually,
it still doesn't run. Also the circular hide inactive icon on the far bottom
right of the taskbar disappeared. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Hi Alexc,

Click Start > Open My Computer > Locate the Hard Drive that the
operating system is installed on. > Right-click on that Drive and click
Properties. > When opened click Tools > Under Error-checking click Check Now
Check Both Options and click Start > Click Yes to schedule > Reboot and let
Chkdsk run.

Do this each time you are experiencing this problem. (From Experience!)

Hi thecreator, I tried what you said and those programs still won't run. I
don't know why...I haven't changed anything on my computer the last time
except the wallpaper and installing a very small program which I have since
removed.

Have you tried a System Restore to a date before the problem started?

Yes, I have tried the system restore at multiple restore pts but I just get
the same old "Your system restore failed....you have not made any changes
since the last restore point" message which is odd in of itself. I have also
tried reinstalling the OS (just a shallow reinstall).

Hi Alexc,

Do you have an image of the operating system to restore? Have you
created one?

Also, have you the Windows XP CD? Can you boot from it to start the
Recovery Console in order to run Chkdsk /r?
