startup problems

Im trying to start my PC,which runs on Win XP, and its
giving me a message saying:
"file may be corrupt or missing: windows\system32
\config\system"

It worked fine last night, and I can't seem to boot it
from a CD. Any ideas? and will reinstalling wondows
erase my files? thanks
