I am running winxp sp2 on a dell inspiron 8200 laptop 512 Mgb memory

Startup is such a slow occasion. The hard drive light just blinks like
crazy and it takes more than a minute or two for the hard drive to
settle down and the hourglass to rest so that I can access the
computer and/or my software programs. I have run spybot and pest
patrol on the system, wondering if there is a virus, trojan or the
like. No reports of anything. I even went to pcpitstop and ran the
tests and nothing unusual showed up.

So I decided to defrag and noticed that it runs really slow and is
reporting that it is MOVING??!! the following files (among others I
assume, I quit the program and came running here for help after 8% was
completed!!)
A0001501.dll
A0001464.dll
A0001605.dll
A0001312.dll
A0001018.dll
Then it switches to these:
A0000881.exe
A0002953.exe
A0001132.exe
A0000839.exe

I am wondering if there is some nasty running around on my computer
that is not getting reported by spybot, pest patrol, or my anti-virus
software (which is the software provided by the isp (sbc dsl yahoo)

Any help or direction you can give me will surely help me to have a
better day.

TIA
Joanne

Researching in Google suggests something has turned off
your anti-virus and you are infested.

Download Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

Fits on a floppy which you can write protect before running. This is
useful if the computer does not have a CD drive as some older computers
do not. It would be better to download to another machine and put on the
floppy before introducing the disk to the infected machine. Make sure
you run the anti-virus scan in safe mode.

When dealing with a persistent virus / trojan you need to delete system
restore points and not use them as they will contain the virus and put
it back into your system. Turn off System Restore until cleaning is
finished. Also run your anti-virus with updated definitions in safe
mode.

Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean, or
just a desktop folder).
Download Sysclean.com (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp) and
place it in this folder.

Download the latest Controlled Pattern Release zip
(http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp, e.g., lpt123.zip) and
extract its contents to the same folder. See the Readme text file for
additional instructions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of all TEMP folders and then your Recycle Bin.

Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.

If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files and you're
running WinXP, create a new Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore), then delete
all but the most recent Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options).

Work through the spyware removal programmes etc in turn in safe mode
until you get no results.

Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another
full system scan.

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.
