Startup problems after applying latest patches

I'm running XP Home Edition SP2 with auto update active. A few nights ago my
system downloaded the latest patches and applied them. However, when I
restarted my system, the OS loads as far as the XP Logo. I leave the system
running for over 30 mins but there appear to be no activity.

I rebooted the system and select load XP with last known configuration but
this was not successful.

Any ideas how to resolve this problem??

Press F8 on restart to enter "Safe Mode With Command Prompt"
