The list taht appears underthe startup tab on running
MSCONFIG contains multiple entries of the same process. How
does one reduce these entries?

Multiple entries of "svchost.exe" is normal. If you try and disable
some of them, you'll cripple the performance of your computer.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This
utility will tell you what's loading at startup and from where. The
included Help will give you some information on where and how to remove
these entries.

Multiples on the Startup tab of MSCONFIG could indicate that you unchecked
a startup item in the past. However when you restarted the system, the
program added itself back into MSCONFIG.

In these cases, you need to open the main program that this startup item
belongs to. Use the programs configuration menus to change the programs
startup behavior. If unable to find the menu setting, check the program's
help file for directions on how to manage its startup options.
