startup error

when i install a new program, such as palm desktop 4.01, when i restart,
windows goes to a blue screen and restarts. I am not able to see the error as
it flashes too quickly. I can start in safe mode, and do a system restore
and its fine, but the program is not there. How do I load programs and
drivers without this happening? I also need to install drivers for my cd
burner, but can't.
