Startup Error

Hi,

When I start my computer, I've started getting an error message within
a few seconds, it then shuts down. The error is:

ERROR. CPU FAN FAILED. HAVE PC SERVICED IMMIEDIATELY. THE SYSTEM
WILL POWER DOWN IN 5 SECONDS.

This occurs when the machine has been off for a while (e.g. overnight,
I get this error every morning).

Despite the obvious, I suspect some other problem as the CPU fan is
working (I took the cover off to watch it as I startup, and it starts
instantly).

Also, a second attempt to start is usually successfull with no error
message and Windows will start and run normally with no problems.

I think that the fan is not being detected at startup. If I am
correct, then I have no idea how to sort it.

My system is: AMD 1.2ghz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP SP2

I would greatly appreciate any help in fixing this annoying error.

Thanks

A lot of motherboards have the ability to detect the RPM of the CPU fan with
a setting in the BIOS to change the minimum detect of the RPM.
Your problem sounds like this minimum detect is set too low........and you
get the problem message.
Check your BIOS for this setting and lower the minimum detect.

Hi

Thanks for the info peter, I've looked in the BIOS, but I can't find
any relevent settings to change the minimum detect, although it does
show the CPU fan speed (under Hardware Monitor). The BIOS on my
computer is PhoenixBIOS Rev 2.07 if that's of any help. Whilst I was
there, I did notice that 'Quickboot' was enabled. Would it make a
difference if I disabled it?

Thanks in advance

ps
I hope I've replied correctly (I'm new to all this).

Most likely would........a sightly slower boot would allow the fan to spin
up to regulation speed which the sensor would detect and no more error
message.
let us know

Hi Peter,

Sorry for the delay getting back (real-life caught up with me), anyway,
I disabled Quickboot, but it hasn't made any difference. Any other
ideas?

Kevin
